How to choose a webcam

Internet technologies are developing rather rapidly. A webcam has become a casual gadget for most users. Its purpose is to provide video communication on the internet with people from different countries using various programs. One can take pictures and record videos as well.

A great variety of these devices is offered at the modern market, so let’s consider which parameters should be taken into account while choosing such a device deliberately.

Matrix

Serious photographic devices are equipped with CCD-matrices. They provide a low noise level but at the same time cost a lot. However, the main purpose of webcams consists in communicating via the network, that’s why, CMOS-matrices are enough for such activities. But if you are going to use the camera for other purposes and with the programs recognizing faces, CCD-matrix is recommended to be used. It causes little noise and offers the video of a higher quality.

The sensitivity of the matrix, measured in lux (lux), can determine the minimal level of illumination for shooting. However, it is noteworthy that even the video of webcams equipped with CCD-matrices will be noisy, when there is lack of light.

Webcam resolution

The quality of the image depends on the resolution of the device (measured in pixels). It should be chosen according to the purpose of use:

1. the resolution of 320x240 is good enough for standard conferences;
2. the resolution of 640x480 is good enough for recording videos;
3. the resolution of 1280x960 and more is necessary for taking large-scale pictures.

Frames per second

The third quality-relevant parameter of the webcam is frames per second (FPS). The more frames per second there are, the smoother and more visually pleasing the image is. The devices with FPS at least 25 FPS are advised to be purchased.

Mounting options

This parameter depends on the place of use of the webcam. The way the device is mounted can be as follows:

1. Desktop. It is the best choice, if there is a lot of space on your desktop. The camera is mounted on the usual stand;
2. On the “pin”. The webcam is mounted on the monitor;
3. Combined. The former 2 options are combined;
4. Suspended. Such a mounting technique is applied when the camera is used for video surveillance.

Connection options

The most popular camera models are equipped with USB (2.0 or 3.0) connection. This interface enables to transmit data quickly. If you have a desktop computer, you should buy at least 1.5 meter cable, in order to have no problems while installing the webcam. The length doesn’t really matter in case of a laptop.

The cameras connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi should be mentioned as well, but they are expensive and operate less stable, that’s why, they are not so wide-spread.

Network webcams can be connected via the Internet. Typically, such devices are installed outdoors and in kid rooms, so that parents could control their child distantly.

Operating system support (OS)

Most webcams support Windows OS. Nevertheless, on buying one, you should specify whether the device operates on your system.

Additional options

The following additional options should be mentioned:

• Automatic zoom. Expensive models have the option of automatic zoom. It enables the user to set the zooming to the object in auto mode. It is very convenient.
• Built-in microphone. The quality of the microphone, as well as the quality of the built-in camera, isn’t always the best, however, it works fine for casual communication and you don’t have to buy a microphone separately.
